Susan Sandburg - Vice Chair:
Susan Sandberg is an at-large councilmember on the Bloomington City Council finishing her second year in public office this December. Susan was President of the City Council in 2008. She serves as council liaison with several community groups including the BEDC, Chamber of Commerce Legislative Committee, the Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District (BEAD) advisory committee, and the Bloomington Community Arts Council. Susan volunteers with local arts nonprofits on a number of review panels for arts grants. Susan also serves on the Jack Hopkins Social Services Grant committee.
A social justice and anti-poverty activist, Susan has been a member and past president of the South Central Community Action Program board providing services for low-income families. She continues with SCCAP on the finance committee, and has served as emcee for the annual Homeward Bound Walk. With a background in the performing arts and social service, Susan combines both as a volunteer facilitator of the New Leaf/New Life Theater program in the Monroe County Correctional Center. Having taught theater classes inside the jail for the past two years, Susan now works with a support group of former inmates returning to the community. Susan is Program Coordinator for the Arts Administration program at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University. In 2009 Susan will join her friend and colleague from the Monroe County Council, Jill Lesh, as co-host of the monthly Citizen's Breakfasts. Both Jill and Susan ran on platforms to promote better collaboration between City and County leadership, and both officials will work diligently toward that goal in the coming year.
A founding member of the Democratic Women's Caucus, Susan Sandberg has served as Vice President since its inception in 2004 following her first campaign for City Council in 2003. A true believer in the mission of preparing women for the pipeline to run for public office in support of competency and civility in local government, Susan would like to remain on the DWC Steering Committee as Vice President in the coming year.
